The Conservation Society of San Antonio is one of the nations oldest historic preservation organizations, founded in 1924.The Society works to save the architectural, natural and cultural heritage of the San Antonio area through education, advocacy and community revitalization.The Society has had a principal role in the conservation of the World Heritage San Antonio Missions since the 1920s.It owns and operates the Yturri-Edmunds Homestead museum and leases several other historic properties in the city.The Society has almost 1,000 members and provides regular heritage education opportunities and grants.In addition to annual awards and building grants programs, the Society partners with City, State, and local communities to highlight the rich heritage of the nations seventh largest city and its surrounding counties.Each spring during Fiesta, the Society hosts A Night In Old San Antonio, the nations largest preservation fundraiser.

The Opportunity

The Society is seeking a seasoned professional with deep experience in preservation and conservation; proven leadership capabilities, and fundraising and development acumen.The Executive Director is responsible for guiding the Societys mission, leading a staff of 12, working with the Board of Directors and being a principal liaison with public officials, business leaders, neighborhood organizations and other community non-profits. The Executive Director manages day-to-day operations of the Society and works closely with the President on strategy and messaging.The full-time position reports directly to the President and the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

  • Manage 12 Staff and 9 properties including 17 structures.
  • Promote the architectural, natural and cultural heritage of the San Antonio region.
  • Work with the President, Board and Staff to develop advocacy positions.
  • Be the principal contact with the Citys Office of Historic Preservation, the Texas Historical Commission, and local and regional heritage non-organizations.
  • Oversee all functional areas including advocacy, programs, marketing, fundraising, finance and operations. Assist in the development of public programming.
  • Recruit and retain a high-performing Staff with opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Conduct development and fundraising to insure the financial health of the organization.
  • Grow the base of donors and funding sources.
  • Attend state and national preservation conferences and advocacy events.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of local, state and federal preservation practices, including but not limited to the National Historic Preservation Act, local preservation ordinances, design guidelines, the Secretary of the Interiors Standards, conservation easements and zoning.
  • Bachelor of Arts or Sciences in historic preservation, urban planning, architecture, architectural history or related field. Masters degree preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in non-profit management, including direct management of Staff and working closely with volunteers.
  • Proven leadership experience in preservation advocacy, coalition building and interfacing with public officials and community groups.
  • Strong working knowledge of San Antonio history, architecture, natural areas and cultural heritage.
  • Demonstrated ability to raise funds through grants, donor cultivation and events.
  • Ability to discuss and construct budgets and have a working knowledge of accounting procedures and financial reporting.
  • Ability to handle potentially stressful situations with diplomacy, tact and professionalism.
  • Ability to work with attorneys and others to review contracts.
  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives and multi-task.
  • Ability to collaborate with a range of volunteers, staff, board and advocates.
  • Proficiency with standard office software including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Adobe, Teams, Zoom and other teleconferencing platforms.

The Conservation Society provides a generous benefits package including health insurance, retirement fund contributions, paid vacation and paid holidays.The salary range for the Executive Director is $100,000+ commensurate with education and experience.
