Description Read electric and water meters and record consumption; and identify meter equipment problems.
Essential Functions Follow assigned routes on foot or in vehicle to read meters and record readings including re-reads, transfers of service readings and final readings; make necessary calculations. May deliver delinquent account notification to customers during assigned routes.
Maintain consistency of meter readings; ensure that meters are registering properly; report meter conditions, defects or suspicious observations to supervisor and record; inspect meters and meter connections for defects, damage and unauthorized connections; report problems to supervisor.
Read meters for transfers of utility service, which may include turning service on or off if not handled directly by Line Department.
Perform readings of unread and problematic meters.
Install locks and reset meters.
Ensure accurate meter operation by closing or replacing lids and boxes.
Tactfully respond to citizen inquiries and complaints.
Must have reliable transportation.
Maintain City meter reading vehicles and equipment; ensure that vehicles and equipment are functioning properly.
Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge of:
Principles and procedures of record keeping.
Methods, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in the reading of meters.
Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.
Safe work and driving practices.
Basic arithmetic principles.
Ability to:
Walk several miles per day in all weather conditions, at a pace that ensures daily assignments are accurately completed.
Provide reliable transportation that may need to be used while working.
Learn meter equipment and their respective functions.
Learn methods, techniques, tools, equipment, and materials used in the installation of meters.
Learn geography of assigned areas.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
Identify minor meter box irregularities, malfunctions and tampering and recommend corrective action.
Shut certain electric meters on and off not handled directly by line department.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Deal tactfully with the public.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
Perform assigned duties with manual dexterity and significant independence in adverse weather conditions and under a variety of hazards including vicious pets and hot wires.
Operate a vehicle in a safe manner.
Perform basic arithmetic calculations.
Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Basic knowledge of computers and skills using email.

Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
License or Certifications:

Working Hours:
Position approximately 16 hours per week working two consecutive days in a row (i.e. Monday & Tuesday or Thursday & Friday). Hours are dependent upon department needs.
Salary:
Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.
Residency:
All Distribution, Engineering, Dispatch, Transmission/Substation Division Personnel must live within 30-minute distance of 1116 W. North Front St, Grand Island, Nebraska.
Other:
The position involves considerable walking outdoors in all types of weather.
